The main characters of "A midsummer Night's dream"

Theseus- Theseus is the Duke of Athen who is marrying Hippolyta. He decrees that Hermia must marry Demetrius or be either sentenced to death or to a life in a convent. However at the end of the play, he insists that all of the loves marry along with him.
Hippolyta- Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons and is betrothed to Theseus. Those two were once enemies though Thesues won her in the battle. Lysander- Lysander is Hermia's beloved one. However Egeus (Hermia's father) does not approve of him. Rather than lose his lover, he plans to escape with her to his widowed aunt's home. During a night in the forest, he mistakenly doused by Puck with the 'love-in-idleness' potion causing him to briefly fall in love with Helena. Oberon, after realizing the mistake, makes Puck reverse the spell thus in the end of the Hermia and him once again are in love and marries. Hermia- Hermia loves Lysander though her father insists she marries Demetrius or else put to death for disobedience. Rather than accepting this dire fate, she agrees to run away with Lysander. However during the chaotic night in the woods, she is shocked to see her beloved one abandon her whilst he declares his love for Helena. By the play's end, Puck reversed the spell, and Lysander's true love for Hermia restored. Despite her fathers opposition to their union, the two marry with Thesues' blessing. Helena- Helena is the abused lover of Demetrius. When the play begins, he has abandoned her for Hermia. Desperate to win him back, Hermia tries anything, even betraying Hermia, her childhood best friend. With the help of Oberon's love juice, Demetrius finally falls back in love with her and are married at the end of the play. Demetrius- Demetrius is in love with Hermia in the beginning of the play. He had onced loved Helena but abandoned her. Not only does he reject Helena's deep love, he vows to hurt her if she doesn't leave him along. With the help of Oberon's love juice, he relinquishs Hermia and marries Helena. Oberon- Oberon is the King of the Fairies and is fighting with Titania when the plays begins because he wants the custody of the Indian boy she is raising. So he hatches a plan to win the boy away by placing love juice in her eyes. During her magic-induced love affair, he convinces her to relinquish the boy. Once he has the boy, he releases Titania from her spell and the two are united. Titania-Titania is Oberon's wife and is the Queen of Fairies. Because of Titania's argument with Oberon, the entire human and natural world is in chaos. Oberon wants the Indian boy she is protecting though refuses to give him up. Following Oberon's application of the love juice, she falls in love with Bottom. Once he has the boy, Oberon released her from the spell. Puck-Puck is Oberon's jester and is responsible for anointing Lysander with the love juice which was intended for Demetrius. He enjoys the comedy that ensues when Lysander and Demetrius are both in love with Helena though follows Oberon's orders to reunite the correct loves. He had the final words of the play emphasizing that the entire play was just a dream. Nick Bottom- Bottom is a weaver who plays Pyramus and is the most outgoing of the group of actors. However Puck transforms him into a donkey and Titania falls in love with him. When he returned to his normal self, he cannot speak about what happened to him though vows to have Peter Quince to write about it in a ballad called, 'Bottom's Dream" Egeus-Egeus is Hermia's tyrannical father and capriciously declares that she must marry Demetrius or be put to death for disobedience; according to the law of Athens, daughters must obey their fathers or forfeit their lives. At the end of play, he is schoked to learn that Lysander and Hermia tried to flee Athens and insists that they should be punished though Thesues overrules him making the loves marry instead. Philostrate- Philostrate is Theseus' Master of Revel and arranges the selection of performances for Theseus' wedding. He tries to dissuade the wedding party from choosing 'Pyramus and Thisbe' though is overruled by Theseus. Peter Quince- Peter Quince is a carpenter and the director of the group of actors who perform 'Pyramus and Thisbe' which he has written for the celebration of Theseus and Hippolyta's wedding. Francis Flute- Francis plays the role of Thisbe and is displeased to be given a woman's role as he wants to let his beard grow though Quince assures him that he cna play the part in a mask. Tom Snout- Snout is a tinker and plays the role of Wall in 'Pyramus and Thisbe' Snug- Snug is a joiner who plays the lion in 'Pyramus and Thisbe. Robin Starveling- Starveling is a tailor and represents Moonshine in 'Pyramus and Thisbe' Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, Mustardseed- They are all Titania's fairies. |
